Being a mother when you’re not 100%

Today I have learned that as mothers we are pretty amazing. We look after others, when we could do with looking after ourselves. When we get back to 100% we wil be able to do all the things we can’t while we are unwell. Until then, we need to take it easy, and be kind to ourselves.

My cold/flu has been coming and going for the past few weeks. When I was really unwell, my hubby would stay home from work to look after the kids. Now it’s tough because I am well enough that I can be out of bed, but not well enough to have the energy to keep on top of the house.

I must be feeling better and am not too sleep depreived because I am itching to clean up the house today.

Isn’t it interesting how our physical health and mental health has such a big influence over everything. It is common sense really, but it is something that we often overlook when our reserves are depleated. It isn’t until we recover to our “normal” selves, that we realise that our “get-up-and-go” had gone on a holiday.

Here are some simple tips, for when your “get-up-and-go” decides to have a “walk-about”: Continue reading

Fog photography Part 2

Foggy day Dancing Fog

Today I have learned that if the fog starts to get too heavy, go higher!

The blue skies together with the blanket of fog creates amazing photos. One thing is to be patient, one minute the skyline can be hidden, the next minute it totally clears up.

It pays to have a pick of places to go to when the fog comes in, that will give you the kind of photos that you are after. This may mean asking other photographers where they go, or go on your own scouting mission.

One way to know if you got a good spot,  is when you see all the other photographers flocking to that spot on a foggy day. Like you can see in the photo below.

Today I have learned that you can take advantage of the fog, by looking out for objects that slowly dissppear into the fog

When the fog sets in you don’t need to abandon your photo session. Look around you to see if there are any interesting shots that involve objects that recede into the fog as it gets further away from you. This can create a lovely moody, mysterious shot.

Getting Perspective

“Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgement will be surer; since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgement….Go some distance away, because the work appears smaller, and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seen.”

LEONARDO DAVINCI

Most important investment

“Meditation, walking, gardening, inspirational reading, listening to quiet music, or just sitting and taking in the present moment are soul choices that restore us to ‘ourselves’. They bring our scattered sense of self back to the centre where it belongs.

Looked at that way, the time you give to ‘being’ could be the most important investment you make each day.”

Tune into you

Today I have learned that one of the best gifts that you can give to yourself is the gift of time with youreslf.

Sometimes I feel like I am on a strong current that is pulling me along. It especially feels like that when I have a big list of things to do. I also feel like that when there are things that I wish I could be doing better, but don’t have the time or energy to do them.

  • Do I take time to reflect on my life?
  • Do I reflect on how I spend my day?
  • Are my priorities in order?
  • Am I using my time effectively?
  • Am I living a balanced life?
  • Am I recognising the joyful moments?
  • Could I be making better choices?
  • Do I have the courage to make different choices?

The more and more off course I get, the more I realise that I have stopped asking those questions.

I have realised that it is so important to take ourselves out of our busy lives, and give ourselves the gift of being with ourselves, and allowing our inner voice to be heard and to listen to our instincts.

You may have  ways that you  slow down and get in touch with yourself. Some people meditate.  Being close to nature helps to centre me. I just love looking out over the ocean, it has such a calming and rejuvenating effect.

I am going to commit to waking  up early and to write my random thoughts in my journal again. It is amazing how answers come to you and things get solved as you write things out.
