Fun Kids Activity: Capturing the world through your kids eyes

On Monday the kids were off school early, so we took advantage of the extra “free” time and went to Te Papa (Wellington museum – our favourite hang out when it is cold and windy outside!)

The kids took our new family camera for a test drive. It was nice and light for the kids to use, and they loved walking around the museum documenting their trip by taking photos!

My 5, 7 and 9 year old really enjoyed this, my 3 year old wasn’t too interested – she was too busy exploring! I noticed my 9 year old was particularly excited about being able to take her own photos. (So I made a mental note, that this would be a perfect way to keep her engaged if we ever do something that is gauged towards younger children.)

The children can do many things with their photos!

They can:

  • email them to grandma and grandad
  • make a slide show of the photos to view on family night
  • enter the photo on to KidsClick
  • make their own photo collages using Picasa
  • talk about why they took their photo
  • write about their photos
  • make their own blog and showcase the photos
  • print out smaller pictures to stick into their journals
  • let their mother use them for a blog post ;) hehehe

Lots of car parks to choose from! Bonus!

A cool photo of the ceiling in the foyer of the Museum

A map of constellations on the museum. The kids love skidding on their knees over it for some reason?? (Te Papa is a kid friendly museum...hehehe)

I still have memories of the fish display from the old museum from when I was a kid

The kids and I checking out the exhibits (Yay! I'm in the photo for a change!)

My son looked up at the ceiling and asked what this was....I said it was the skeleton of a whale...then he asked where the heart was..

(my photo)...then he exclaimed "I know where it is!" and ran to the nearby Discovery Centre, and hopped into the life size model of a whale's heart!

Check out http://squid.tepapa.govt.nz/ to find out more information about our "Colossal Squid"

More interesting sights my kids found

(my photos) We all had a blast!

Can you believe that we were at the museum for 2 hours, and they were spent mainly at the Science Discovery Centre and up by the Stowaways Container!

Reality Check: As soon as we got home it was off to the Parent Teacher interviews. So we had a quick snack before we left, and then a very late dinner. If only we could make time expand!

YUMMY ZUCCHINI SPICE CUPCAKE RECIPE

I can imagine patting myself on the back for eating a “healthy” zucchini cupcake (as I lick all the delicious cream cheese frosting off the top *mmmm*) Thanks Bridget from Bake at 350 for sharing this recipe (and your son who baked it and rated it a 9.5/10!)

FANTASTIC SETTEE MAKEOVER

Kate from Centsational Girl shares how she was able to transform her settee from this:

To this, by sewing together a slipcover:

She shows us how she was able to pull it off, even though she doesn’t consider herself an expert sewer (you couldn’t tell!) I’m inspired!

CUTE HEADBANDS YOU CAN MAKE YOURSELF

Jill has made these great headbands in preparation for her hospital stay once her baby comes. They turned out great! On her blog Homemade by Jill she shares the link to the tutorial for these headbands. Thanks for the link Jill!

USING MUSIC TO LIFT THE MOOD

I love how Becca from Blue Cricket Design retells a real life mummy moment where she was having a tough day, and how she was able to turn it around because she decided to “DANCE or go INSANE” (I agree with Becca. Turning on the music and dancing with the kids has been a life saver and an instant attitude adjuster – for the kids and their mummy!)

Lessons in Motherhood: The many pictures of Motherhood

On occasion our outings have looked like this:

But more often it looks like this:

For some reason my kids like to run everywhere instead of walk?! (Can you imagine 4 kids trying to outrun each other…having absolutely NO idea where they are going…well those are my kids ;) hahaha)

And then there are moments like this:

Where everything fades into the background, and all that is left is you and your child. HEAVEN!

5 Great Finds: Outdoor Movies, Paper Owls, BBQ Cupcakes, Creative Mending, Whoopie Pies

OUTDOOR MOVIES

Ever since I saw posts about outdoor movie nights on Karen Cheng’s blog and vintage chica, I loved the idea! Apartment Therapy [via ohdeedoh] featured “The Airblown Inflatable Widescreen Deluxe Outdoor Movie Screen” (available through Target.com for $195.49). Can you imagine having all your children’s friends over for a big movie night on this! Wow!

3D PAPER OWLS

Larissa from mmmcrafts is one of those people who puts in a WHOLE LOT of effort, so others can enjoy making beautiful projects. Like this 3D Paper Owl tutorial that was featured on Skip to My Lou. Gorgeous!

CREATIVE MENDING

Who would have thought that you could mend clothing this way? Sherri from daintytime [via whip up] has inspired me! I have a couple of jeans that my children have worn a hole through that could do with a little TLC. I also read that you could use fabric from one of your child’s favourite shirts (that they have grown out of) to make it a bit sentimental.

WHOOPIE PIES

These look SOOO good. I just want to eat them up now! The real question is, how do I become friends with Mrs Bettie Rocker [via kojodesigns] so I can “pop” by whenever she makes them! YUM! (The recipe calls for Marshmallow Fluff…I don’t think we stock this in New Zealander, so just google how to make a substitute for this)

What makes you think I have kids?

Today I went to collect our vacuum cleaner that had been repaired.

After the repairman emerged from getting our vacuum from out back, he asked, “Do you have kids?”

“Yes……?” I replied wondering what was on my face or clothes that gave it away!

Then he placed the vacuum on the counter, and showed me the worksheet that was sellotaped to my vacuum cleaner and smiled:

I just burst out laughing!!

These are the repairman’s notes:

Work Performed: DISMANTLED, CHECKED/TESTED  CONTROL, MOTOR & SWITCH  ALL OK (FOUND BABY SPOON INSIDE THE MACHINE ). CHECKED POWER CORD (FAULTY – OPEN CIRCUIT). REMOVED  DAMAGED CORD TO PLUG, REPLACED PLUG & RE-TERMINATED. CHECKED VAC OPERATION 16/06 TO COLLECT

The “angel” responsible, was turned in by their siblings when I got home ;)

Lessons in Motherhood: My health wake up call

We often associate “Sustainable Living” to the environment, but have you ever considered how it can relate to our health and wellbeing?

Is the way you treat your body sustainable?

Luckily throughout my life, and through my pregnancies I have been quite “healthy”, so I thought. In other words, I haven’t had many complications. So I have continued doing what I do, and not thinking much about it.

I have been unwell, on and off for about 3 months now, and today I was thinking, “This is the only body I have. If I want it to become a well oiled machine, what would I need to do?”

As I thought about nutrition, hydration, and exercise I was shocked to realise that the very thing that I encourage my children to do – in order for them to be healthy and happy – I had stopped doing myself!

Without thinking about it, I had developed some habits that were not doing my body any favours:

  • I was good at getting my children to eat a healthy high fibre breakfast to start their day on a good note, but sometimes I forgot to eat breakfast.
  • I was good at giving my children water or milk to drink, but I forgot to pour me a glass when I ate, or re-hydrate myself during the day.
  • I was good at including vegetables with my children’s meals and plenty of fruit in their lunch boxes and snacks, but I forgot to prepare a salad or eat plenty of fruit throughout the day.
  • I was good at getting my children to go to bed at their bed time because I knew they would become grumpy and irritable in the morning, but I forgot that if I had a late night it can actually make me grumpy and irritable too.

With so many things to do and remember, sometimes taking care of ourselves physically can get dropped off our to do list. When there doesn’t seem to be an immediate detrimental effect, we continue the behaviour that isn’t “sustainable” for our bodies.

On The Oprah Winfrey’s Show: “What is your body trying to tell you”, Dr. Northrup says your health depends on what’s going on with your mind, body and soul, and your symptoms are actually your soul’s way of bringing deeper issues to your attention. “You’re in labor with yourself because everything that no longer serves your highest purpose and your optimal health starts to go away and your body gives you signals’—Hey, you’ve been putting too much stuff under the carpet emotionally, nutritionally, not exercising … putting everyone else first. The kids, the husband, the job, whatever,’” Dr. Northrup says. “And your soul is saying, ‘What about me? What about me?’ And your body will start getting symptoms to hit you over the head with till you wake up.”

I went to the doctor again today, and I will be doing more tests, but one of the things that the doctor did tell me I needed to do was get more water into me and eat more fibre (fruits and veg!). So simple! Yet it is something that I have not placed a high enough priority on lately.

I think the learning I am going to take away with me from this experience is, “I am not putting a high enough priority on my health.”

I hope that by sharing this, you won’t need a wake up call like I did, before you start thinking  about how you can make changes in your lifestyle to make your health and wellbeing more sustainable.

Much love~!

CREATIVE SUMMER TO DO LIST

I am into to do lists at the moment! So this one caught my eye! Gorgeous colours!! eighteen25 has provided a great tutorial on how to put this beauty together. They also include a free downloadable header for it!

http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/2010/06/summer-to-dos.html

If you are like me and are currently trying to keep your toes warm during winter…you may want to consider making your own winter list. My friend posted her list up on facebook and inspired us to follow her example.

Some of things she included:

  • Going puddle-stomping in our gumboots.
  • Having a pajama day with lots of snuggling in bed with my littles and reading my favourite old books to them, creating worlds with the hills of our knees under the blankets and populating them with duplo animals.
  • Winter walking on the Waikanae beach, rugged up warm and toasty, but knowing by the end of the trip we’ll be stripped down for paddling and chilly but delighted!
  • BIG bubble baths…
  • Snuggling on the couch with popcorn and fun movies.
  • Making home made bread and big pots of yummy soup.
  • Getting some cute new WARM winter pjs.

Wherever you are in the world, why not put a list together (even if it is on a spare piece of paper, stuck on the fridge door) of fun things to do with the kids and enjoy the season you are in ;)

Discovery Date: Getting some pespective

Thank you for all the good vibes that you sent my way after hearing I was unwell. I feel MUCH better today.

For my discovery date today, I decided to take some time out and reflect.

I tend to have my head down and just run in all sorts of directions, so it’s good for me to take a breather, take a look around, and make sure that I am on the “right path” so to speak ;)

I wrote down some simple things I could do each week under different headings like “family”, “kids”, “interests”, “house”, “me”, “spiritual” etc.

Although it would be nice to do everything on my list, I think what is more important is having my thoughts written down, and having a basic plan of where I eventually want to end up. I will also be able to see clearly if there are specific areas in my life that I am neglecting.

My goals? Loads of things! I want to do a good job in the roles that I have. Right now I am also striving for… Balance…Contentment and Happiness (that’s all! hahaha)

Inspirational Poem: What Did I Do Today?

Today I left some dishes dirty.
The bed got made around 3:30.
The diapers soaked a little longer,
The odor grew a little stronger
The crumbs I spilled the day before,
Are staring at me from the floor.
The fingerprints there on the wall,
Will likely be there still next fall.
The dirty streaks on the windowpanes,
Will still be there next time it rains.

Shame on you, you sit and say,
Just what did you do today?
I held a baby till she slept,
I held a toddler while he wept.
I played a game of hide and seek,
I squeezed a toy so it would squeak.
I pulled a wagon, sang a song,
Taught a child right from wrong.

What did I do this whole day through?
Not much that shows, I guess that ‘s true.
Unless you think that what I’ve done,
Might be important to someone
With deep green eyes and soft brown hair,
If that is true….I’ve done my share.

“Out of Order”

I am “out of order” again! My head ache from last month has come back. :( Thankfully, not with the body ache *phew*.

All I want to do is hop in bed, pull my blankets up and snuggle into them.

I have to say, when you are unwell, you really do appreciate your health, and the ability to get up and do things with ease!

I hope you are all keeping well!

Will be in touch soon!

TIPS ON TAKING FAMILY PHOTOS

Read these two blog entries by some amazing photographers regarding taking photos with families…and especially how to take good shots of children:

Me Ra Koh gives a great tip about asking a child if you can take pictures of anything besides their face (eg their pretty shoes).  She says they will never know if you zoomed in or out, and they will be more relaxed.

http://www.merakoh.com/2010/06/03/part-3-photo-tips-for-family-portraits-seattle-confidence-photography-workshop-for-women/

On Photos by Emile [via Blue Cricket Design] shared a good tip about sitting a child on a chair if you find they can’t keep still or tend to run away.

They have other helpful tips and beautiful photos, so be sure to check them out!

FUN TIME-WASTERS AT THE ITUNES APP STORE

As if you didn’t have enough things that suck up your time, I thought I would share with you 2 free application. (Disclaimer: Just go to the app store to get these applications…but I take no responsibility for the amount of time that gets “lost” when playing these games…hehehe)

Runway: It is a relatively simple game, but can be a bit addictive ;)

You are the air traffic controller, and you have to land the planes, unload, refuel, reload and then get the plane to take off. Did I mention that there are about 4+ planes that you are controlling?!?! (My free version is a bit more basic than this screen shot below)

Doodle Find: You are told to find certain objects in the doodles/clip art on your scrren…eg 1 umbrella, 2 scissors, 4 buckets etc. It is one of those games where you constantly want to beat your previous score.

Discovery Date: Admiring Wellington and a Good Book

I forced myself outdoors for my discovery date today. I had to take advantage of the fact that the rain had stopped (for the moment.)

I took my camera and headed into Wellington city.

I love how our city and the people can progress, but does not turn its back on the beauty from the past.

On your walk down Lambton Quay you are bound to pass buskers and even workers digging right in the middle of the footpath.

I ended my discovery date at Astoria in Midland Park. I grabbed myself a yummy tart and hot chocolate then found a table outside.

There were moments I actually wished I had sunglasses, and other times, a scarf! That’s Wellington for ya!

Recently, I received a surprise package in the mail. My best friend had bought me my very own copy of “A Mother’s Book of Secrets“! (She’s so good to me…totally spoilt!)

Shawni Eyre Pothier co-wrote it with her mother Linda Eyre. It is a BEAUTIFUL book, which I am sure a lot of mothers can relate to.

It is filled with real life experiences and practical tips as well.

I think what makes it special, is that it is written from Shawni’s point of view, which is from the trenches of motherhood. As well as Linda’s point of view, which is looking back on motherhood with a bit of perspective.

Some of my favourite quotes so far:

“There isn’t a more difficult yet more important and magnificent career than that of a mother”

Linda Eyre

“Sometimes success is when we don’t get through the to-do list but instead stop long enough to notice the little things. To savor moments. Not only to notice the delight in our children’s eyes, but to help create that delight.”

Shawni Eyre Pothier

(Shawni has a blog called 71 Toes. It’s a great blog, so be sure to check it out!)

Fun Kids Activity: Guess the middle name

(I searched my photos to see if I had ever taken any pictures of my kids while they were eating, and I came up empty. I guess because I am outnumbered 1 to 4, taking photos at the dinner table is the last thing on my mind! hahaha!)

Lately we have changed our eating habits for dinner. I used to hover, clean and snack, while our kids ate at the breakfast bar (I think I got into the habit of “what’s the point in sitting down, when I will have to get up for this-that-and the other”)

Now we all sit down at the dining table (including me!) and it has been great!

A fun activity that we did the other day, was “guess the middle name”. I would say a middle name of someone in our family, and the kids had to guess who it belonged to. We started out with people in our immediate family. Then we did grandparents, then uncles, aunties and cousins.

It was a fun way to pass the time during dinner, and get to know a little bit more about people in our family.

I took these photos while I was doing some Sunday baking this week.

I included them to remind us how food and children can also be a time that can be quite fun! (Good luck!!)
