Health Tip: “Before every meal/snack I drink at two full cups of water!  This helps me to adequately hydrate and I feel like I’m not as inclined to overeat because I already feel full.”

A Good Read – Wink: The ninja who wanted to be noticed By J.C. Phillips

This wonderful book that we borrowed this week, is about Wink, who has just started ninja school.

There he is taught how to be stealth-like and silent, but he always seems to get into trouble with Master Zutsu (like the time he turned up dressed up in a bright colourful ninja suit  when they were supposed to be practicing how to “disappear into the landscape”.)

Finally, he finds the perfect way to express himself, that is true to himself and his love of being a ninja.

I love the message in the book. I love the artwork. I also love how it is set in Japan (with my mother being Japanese…I’m a bit biased!)

Tips and Tricks:

After squeezing your lemons for baking etc, take your used lemons and put them in a microwavable bowl. Cover them with water. Put the bowl in the microwave and heat it until it boils.

The lemony steam loosens any grime in your microwave…now just wipe down with a paper towel!

My favorite blog post this week:

Mother’s Day. 10 gifts isn’t too much to ask for is it? is a beautiful post at Caro & Co. Caro lists 10 things she wishes for on mother’s day…it is a beautiful list. Here are her first two, to give you a sneak peek:

  1. I hope that my children will continue to question everything and explore alternatives when necessary;
  2. I hope that they maintain their delicious sense of humour;

Go to her blog to see the full 10 thoughtful wishes.

My two lovely friends have started a new blog! The Mama Manual. Please stop by and have a look!

Lesson learned the past few days:

DO NOT make a double batch (or quadruple batch..whoops!) of a recipe you have not tried before! You may end up with a whole lot of food that tastes completely different from how you thought it would.

On my mind:

How am I going to pick up one daughter from netball at 4.30pm, when I have to be dropping off another daughter at an appointment at the same time???

I saw this on Meghan’s pinterest board, and I think about it every night before I go to bed.

My creative space: Kia Kaha Christchurch

Our beautiful country has been rocked by another earthquake on Monday. Unfortunately, the resilient people of Christchurch bore the brunt of the earthquake, which registered 6.0 on the Richter scale.

All of New Zealand (as well as our overseas friends), have been thinking about the people in Christchurch who are going without power and water and picking up the pieces again (when the earthquake struck earlier this year it was summer, now it is winter in Christchurch.)

Kia Kaha basically means be strong, may strength be with you. It is a way to give our aroha (love) and support. xoxo

On Monday night as part of our family home evening, we turned off all the lights and sat around some candles and talked about what some of the families might be going through after the earthquake. We talked about the things that we are grateful for. Then finished off with a prayer of gratitude and a prayer of comfort and peace for those who may need it.

Art: Odosketch (Thanks Meghan for recommending it! My google reader didn’t bring up your picture when I read about odosketch, then when I went to your blog to get your post link…I realised great minds think alike!!). It does not have the ability to save to your computer or an undo button. I decided to do a screen shot of it so I could add text in Picasa.

Moments That Matter Most

This is such a beautiful video, that I just had to share!

Tips and Tricks:

If you don’t feel motivated to do anything, set your timer and do the dreaded job for 15mins, then do something you like doing for 15mins. Continue to do this until the icky job is done. Quite often, you end up happily doing the jobs that you were putting off.

Lesson learned the past few days:

Each of us comes to this role of being a mother with unique attributes.  We are not born being the ultimate mother robot – every fibre of our being carefully crafted to carry out our role as a mother.

Some of our characteristics really help us in our role, but we may also have characteristics that seem to hinder us. That is what makes us human. That is what makes us unique.

We need to embrace and celebrate the attributes that assist us in this role (eg patience, organisational skills, spontaneity, creativity). We also need to recognise that even though some attributes seem to be conflicting, in our role as a mother (eg love of solitude, temper, need for order, living in chaos) they are the very things that seem to be attached to our strengths and our personality. The ying and the yang. We all have strengths and weaknesses. There is no such thing as a stepford wife. ;)

On my mind:

This morning, the computer seems to be going slower and slower…

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses:

The Serenity Prayer:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next. Amen.

Update: My new sleep schedule

Last week, I proclaimed to you all that I was giving up the late nights and the sleep ins, for a more balanced, healthy sleep schedule.

I needed to announce this, because I know how good I am at talking myself into and out of things! I needed the extra “umph” to help me when I felt like slipping into bad habits.

So how has this week gone? I’ve been going to bed anywhere between 10pm-11pm, then waking up anywhere between 6am-7.30am. Not groundbreaking, but it is comfortable enough that I can keep it up, and strict enough that I don’t stay up until the wee hours of the morning.

We had interrupted sleep in our household in the first few days of the new routine, which meant I was feeling pretty tired in the afternoons. Towards the end of the week, I felt much better, and an interesting thing happened….I started getting tired at the right time! I was begging for the bed at 11pm, and I noticed myself stirring at 6am, when usually I would be in a deep sleep.

All in all, it has been a good week. I’ve really enjoyed the quiet time in the morning to read and to have a proper breakfast (instead of having breakfast at lunchtime!)

Whenever I get a chance, I will try to update my progress on twitter.

Guest Post: 300 Women : 300 Dreams : 1 Day

I am excited to have Lisa Woodley from the Yummy Mummy Club join us today. Lisa is a motivated and passionate mother of two young children, and the mastermind behind the Yummy Mummy Club. She puts together special events which allow mothers to have some “me time” and meet other mothers in the area (all this, while juggling her own family!)

I have asked her to talk about her experience at the New Zealand Women’s Conference held in Wellington recently.

Take it away Lisa!

I have tried to sum up my day spent at the NZ Womens Conference but I really can’t, so I won’t.   Instead, I’ll take you for a short walk through my day and tell you what I learnt.

Upon arrival, we lined up to register and were given a goody bag laden with treats and a programme for the day.   The 1st Floor of the InterContinental Hotel had been taken over by 300 women from all walks of life and every one of them was eager to learn, yearning to be inspired and all supporting each other.  It was an electrifying vibe.   Once registered, we sought out the free coffee – after all it was 8:30 on a Saturday morning!

As well as amazing speakers to listen to throughout the day, there were stalls and stands dotted around the 1st Floor, all displaying different types of products and services from financial advisors to shoes, from jewellery to cosmetic surgery.  Every womens’ need seem to be taken care of, including a relaxation room which hosted a nail bar to get your nails done.  There were plenty of raffles on offer with some amazing prizes – of course, I had to enter them all!

Andrea Stewart, the woman behind it all had a dream.  She had a dream to run a conference for women which encouraged them to be the best that they can be, learn from her journey and to dream big.   She told us her story; which took us through motherhood, to finding out she had melanoma.   She spoke with passion, integrity and at the same time she spoke from the heart.   As well as her courageous story, she offered three lessons which she shared with us all:

  1. Your health is your wealth,
  2. Show kindness to others, and
  3. Do it now!

The keynote speaker was Trelise Cooper.  She told us her story of struggles, from a working mother raising a young child to her billion dollar internationally renowned fashion label she has today.   Her advice to everyone was ‘if you can dream it, you can believe it, you can achieve it’.   She also said that ‘everything happens for your highest good’ and to always let your ‘desire to dream be bigger than your fear’.

She told us about her late father and his love of clothes and fashion and during one of her fashion shows turned to her mother and said “You know, if it wasn’t for us, none of these people would be sitting here!”.

Over the course of the day we had to choose between 6 different sessions; all delivered something different.  I learnt about setting and achieving goals, strategies on how to manifest my dreams, how to balance work and family life and I even learnt about “anti-aging” tips from a cosmetic surgeon.  Every speaker brought something wonderful and something different to share and every one of them had a story to tell.

However, if I had to pick a speaker that inspired me the most – it would have to be Sarah Laurie and Changing your Life from Good to Gorgeous!

You could feel the room leaning forward wanting to know more as she told us her story.  Unfortunately, I didn’t write much down as I was truly captivated and didn’t want to miss a word.

Sarah spoke about how before you can follow your dreams and reach your goals, you need to know who you want to BE.   What are your true values?  What are your underlying beliefs?   Only then, when you are clear on who you want to BE, will you know what you’re going to DO and you will HAVE the gains. She explains that too much of today’s society are caught up in the DO and HAVE cycle, and forget about the BE part that they are never truly fulfilled.

She talked about order and told us a funny story about her cluttered house and recruiting in the ‘Orderly Angels’ in to help get her sorted.  She made us smile when she spoke of Marianne Williamsons’ take on 1800s Victorian women “So vogue on the outside, so vague on the inside”; and she summed it up beautifully by saying “that when you follow your bliss, doors will open up, where there was just walls”.

I am very excited to tell you that she has agreed to speak at a Yummy Mummy Club event later in the year which you just can’t afford to miss.

I came home full of grace and full of gratitude for what life has already brought me.   I kissed and hugged my husband and thanked him for allowing me to have a day to myself, because what he gave me was a gift.  I kissed and hugged my children because of the amazing promise and unconditional love they hold in their eyes; they too are a gift.

I had a long hot bath and did a full skin routine, because lets face it, I’m not getting any younger.

And yet, I am still a Mum with lots of ideas but I know I will succeed.   I have a dream and I will tell my story.   I have already achieved more than I ever thought I could and today made me realise that with careful planning and patience, I too, can reach my goals. So as I tucked my 4 year old daughter into bed tonight, I asked her “What kind of person do you want to BE?” and do you know what she said?

“Just like you Mummy, just like you”.

The Yummy Mummy Club is a club for women who are mums and aims to inspire, motivate and support Mums by allowing them to have some ME time through the specially organised events and workshops.
As Mums, we tend to put everyone and everything before ourselves.
Being a Yummy Mummy ISN’T about what you look like, what you wear or what you drive. It’s about how your feel as a woman and your attitude towards motherhood.

Take some time out. Make yourself a priority (even, if it’s just for a little while).

Events that we have done to date include pistol shooting, pole dancing, movie nights, Zumba classes, to name a few. Upcoming events include a Glamour Photo Shoot and a Wardrobe workshop.

It’s totally voluntary and not-for-profit.

My creative space: Personalised Print

My daughter’s best friend turned 4 today. This is the present that I made for her.

Just like last weeks graphic art, all the art was made using SAI (painting programme for Windows) and then I put it together in Microsoft Publisher.

After putting the present together, I ran around like a mad woman cleaning the house to get it ready for the playdate. Creating is so much more fun than cleaning :P

You can see lots of fab projects over at our creative places.

I love me a good sleep in…

Unfortunately, sleep-ins and children do not mix…but it doesn’t stop me from trying! haha

Sometimes, I am up and ready for whatever life throws my way. Other times, I try to squeeze as much time in my nice warm bed as possible.

It is my weakness, my indulgence. I love the warmth of my duvet and the solitude of my bedroom. I LOVE sleep!

You would think that my passion for sleep would see me promptly hopping into bed at night. Alas, this is not so. I also have a weakness for staying up late. If you would ask me what I do…I could not tell you. Not because I’m embarrassed, or because I want to keep my late night activities a secret….it is simply because I can not remember!! **sigh**

So, I have been tossing up an idea in my head for a wee while. I know that getting into a really good sleep routine, would do wonders for so many areas of my life. I wanted to do an experiment. I wanted to see what positive changes would happen if all I did was consistently follow a good sleep schedule.

I am ready for the change. It is going to be really, really hard on a winter’s morning to not snooze my alarm. I also know how hard it is to retire to bed when I feel like my part of the day has only just started.

BUT…..

I look forward to my quiet time in the mornings – to pray, ponder and plan.

I look forward to the fatigue to vanish.

I look forward to seeing what other areas benefit from this simple (ha!) change to my routine.

I will be using twitter throughout the month of June to keep me motivated. So feel free to follow me, and keep my spirits up!

Let me know if you want to join me on this crazy quest. I would be really interested to hear what difference it makes to you.

My creative space: Inspirational Quote

Guess what I have been doing instead of the laundry?!

My creative juices have been flowing lately as I have been creating art using the computer.

I usually start off with a rough idea in my head or a sketch I have done…then I keep on developing it, tweaking it and changing it. It usually morphs into something completely different from what I had in my mind at the beginning.

If I see a colour combination I like while I am surfing the net, or on a greeting card or a piece of fabric, I keep it in mind, then try to incorporate it later in one of my drawings.

The quote I used, is the one I posted a little while ago.

It reminds me of my role as a mother when I read this quote, and the role I have in raising my children. Each day we are planting seeds. At the end of the day, quite often we do not see the harvest. Hopefully the seeds we plant will sprout a happy, healthy and well-balanced “big person” who knows they are loved.

Do you have a favourite quote at the moment?

I’m joining  our creative spaces for the first time! yay!

A Good Read – Codes: How to Make Them and Break Them (Murderous Maths)

Codes: How to Make Them and Break Them (Murderous Maths)

Some of my favourite books that I bought from the Scholastic Book Club were the Spy Books. You know the books which tell you to put talcum powder on your head to disguise yourself as an old person….or would teach you how to brush for finger prints. I also really liked how it would teach you to write codes.

So when I saw Codes: How to Make Them and Break Them (Murderous Maths) at the library, I knew that it would be a hit with the kids.

It is a pretty funny read to start with, plus it gets right into teaching you some complicated code.

I’ve been reading a couple of pages a day to my 6, 8 and 10 year old before bedtime. I must warn you….they will most likely return to their rooms, and instead of going to bed, will hide under their blankets and write code!

Are you burning out??

It was just one of those mornings where the kids got ready really well, hubby was going into work late so he could look after our 4 year old, and I did not have to be anywhere in the morning. I decided to make the most of it, by playing netball with my girls before school.

My 8 & 10 year old started netball for the first time this year, and they are loving it.

Their first game in the rain

When we got to school this morning, our daugthers’  friends joined in, and we had enough to play some netball against each other.

It felt good to run around again, thinking strategically, pushing my body to intercept or to create space to get the ball.

Then it hit….

….the wall.

The body that I had neglected for months by not exercising, started to slow down. My arms started moving more than my feet (imagine a stationary windmill! ha!) I started walking more, and to breath heavier.

“How the heck do they keep this pace up the whole game?!” I thought to myself.

As I walked home, I started thinking about what just happened, and how it relates to life.

We do not do anyone any favours, when we push ourselves by being an energiser bunny, being everything to everyone, and then inevitably burning out.

Unfortunately, we often don’t register that things are “too much”, until we burn out…and by then, the effects on us and our family are obvious.

So what do we do?

One way is to learn from the times we burn out. In this netball situation, I would learn that, if I wanted to play a full 15-20mins I would have to play the game differently and pace myself to “my level” of fitness so I could last the whole time.

In our life, we need to ask ourselves, what is too much? What is my limit?

Our limits constantly change.

  • Going from no children to one child, one child to two children etc etc etc…..
  • the family dynamics: babies, preschool age, primary age, teenagers
  • being sleep deprived
  • having a super active child
  • work, study or church commitments
  • etc etc etc!!

All of this means we need to take a look at our expectations – just because we were able to do it all before, does not necessarily mean we can do it all now. We need to listen to the rhythm of our life.

Everyone’s life is different. We need to slow down to our own “level”, not someone elses.

We are no use to our families or anyone else when we burn out.

Another thing that I learned from my netball experience is that if I want to play with high intensity longer, I would need to get my fitness level up. Just doing a little bit towards my fitness and often, would make a huge difference.

Doing a little and often, gives us the advantage in life too. If we plan ahead, and chip away at the things we need to do, we will avoid having to exert huge amounts of effort in one go, and burning ourselves out. This relates to our home (laundry, decluttering etc), our family (small acts often: eg dinners together, reading with them, dates with children) and our other commitments (working on assignments, projects, returning emails way before deadlines!)

And finally, a lesson that all sports people know, and will testify to:

REST!

A runner would not run 7 days a week, a body builder would not lift weights every day. If you ask anyone who is heavily committed to their sport, they will tell you how important the concept of rest is in avoiding injury.

So, indulge yourself ladies. Do not feel guilty about YOU time! In fact, it is ESSENTIAL to being a well-balanced and fully functioning mother.

Happy Mother’s Day! Some great free resources…

I just wanted to wish you all a special Happy Mother’s Day!

I am grateful for the people around me, who also values and appreciates the role of a Mother.

Sometimes we may feel that we may not be doing our “very best”. We were never given a manual on how to be a parent, when we had our children. A lot of our parenting comes from instincts. I think if we can base our parenting on love and on helping our children reach their fullest potential, we are doing a pretty good job!!

So, THANK YOU MOTHERS, thank you so much for loving your children. That gift alone, will sustain them throughout their life.

Here are a couple of resources, that I think are pretty fantastic.  Enjoy!

So long holidays…it was great while it lasted. See you soon!

In New Zealand, we are coming to the end of our two week, school holiday break.

We have had rain, we have had sun, and we have had lots of wind!

The greater Wellington region had a myriad of activities that one could pick and choose from during the Easter break.

Some cost a bit of money, but are totally worth it! (Carter Observatory, Zealandia, Wellington Zoo, Capital E, Indoor Pools, Chipmunks, Play, $2 Train Days, Indoor Rock Climbing, Movies, Miniature Railways etc etc etc!!)

Some are free! (Shows/craft activities/scavenger hunts put on by the shopping centres, Te Papa, Playgrounds, Bike Tracks, Beaches, Library holiday programmes, Wellington City & Sea, Bunnings Craft Activities & Family Fun Nights, Bush Walks etc etc etc!!)

Just as precious, are the days when we stayed at home and had some downtime. (Sleep ins, puzzles, games, baking, sleep ins, drawing, origami, re-visiting classic DVDs like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, did I mention sleep ins?!?)

I loved having the choice to stay home when the weather got particularly nasty! I’m not looking forward to going outside in that weather for pick ups and drop offs in the coming months. I think I’m going to have to make sure I keep a well-stocked supply of hot chocolate on hand!

I hope you all had a fantastic break, and are all recharged for the coming term.

Notebooks and Pressing Forward…

I have a stack of notebooks, each filled with jumbled thoughts, diary entries, quotes and learning gleaned from the scriptures.

When I open a notebook from the past, it is like re-visiting an old friend. I smile at the hurried notes, goals to work on, diary entries about triumphs and trials, and words of advice and encouragement .

Writing seems to help me gain clarity on my thoughts. I love that!

Here is something I wrote, that I found in one of my notebooks:

This journey in life is like a hike up a mountain.

You could focus on the others ahead of you…

…or you could take the time to see how far you have come.

You could lament over the wrong path that was taken…

…or you could get on the right path now, and learn from your mistakes.

You could complain about how tired you are and give a run down of all the things that are going wrong…

…or you could look out and take in the view and count your blessings.

You could get discouraged and want to stop – believing you are not cut out for this…

…or you could concentrate on your end goal and press forward,

just one. step. at. a. time.

Juggling Motherhood Tips #7: Timesaving tips from a mother of 8

“Hay Juggling Motherhood Readers. So glad to be visiting again… Well you asked for a tip and I just couldn’t decide. I have discovered that our entire life is lived from one “pearl of wisdom” to another…

se7en_512x512

If you had to ask me for only one sanity saver in our home… I would say: Zones. We have zones for different things: a lego zone, a laundry zone, a library zone, a craft zone… and so on… It makes it so much easier to find things, not to mention to tidy up. Just designate one zone to a person and get them to tidy it and repeat until done… it really works for us!!! Meanwhile I rustled up se7en+1 random time-saving tips for you… hope you like them!!!

    DSC07761
  1. Take Out Some Steps: We are always told to break a job down into smaller bites but sometimes a lot of those steps are redundant. When it comes laundry I don’t bother with a laundry basket… if someone has an item of laundry they take it straight to the washer and pop it in!!! When the washer is full they turn it on. Done. In this day and age with colorfast and gentle washers there really is no need to sort and resort laundry… it all goes in, it doesn’t sit around because as soon as it is done it gets hung out and the washer is ready to start accepting gifts for it’s next project!!!
  2. DSC_0376
  3. To Each His Own: It really saves time to have each child responsible for what they are capable of… for example getting their dishes into the dishwasher after meals. I clean as I go when I prepare food, so really at the end of a meal if everyone gets up and puts their dish into the dishwasher all I have to do is wipe the table and turn the washer on. Frankly after supper I want to get out of the kitchen as fast as possible, no lingering after bed-time with dirty dishes!!!
  4. DSC_0173
  5. Keep Like Things Together:This is the zone story again… Really it is a sanity saver for me, with small children I cannot have things scattering to the far ends of the house. Can you imagine looking for shoes every time we go out… all our shoes belong in one spot at the front door. That’s where they can find their shoes and somebody bigger if they need help as they leave the house. Same for lots of other things. For example swimming costumes and towels: we all swim together, all hang on swimming gear on the line together and all in a bag at the door together and there is no confusion when we need them.
  6. IMG_4067
  7. Always Be Ready For Outings: We keep all our extra-murals packed and ready in one spot – there is a music spot where they practice, hang up their instruments and know where to find them when we dash out the door. Our swimming gear is kept all together in a big bag… if we swim at home or dash to swim at friends or the beach we just grab the bag. And so on…
  8. DSC_0575
  9. Make Tomorrow’s Lunch at Suppertime: I only have to make lunch for the father person and he often gets up early before the rest of us and heads for work… I have to have his lunch ready the night before, but there is really nothing worse than a sandwich for lunch that was made yesterday. When I serve dinner I make sure that I put a lunchbox out along with all the dinner plates, as I dish up dinner his lunch is served!!! All I do is add a jar of milk and another jar of yogurt and a fruit snack and his lunchbox is good to go…
  10. DSC_0545
  11. The Quickest Way to Keep Your House Clean is Not to Get it Dirty: We have a rule that you may only eat in the kitchen or outside… I have visitors look at me strangely when I ask their children to step outdoors onto the grass to eat their snack!!! But I do a big sweep and mop of the house once a week and it has to last – the kitchen is another story – every meal time is sweep time and for that I have energetic sweepers!!!

  13. Save yourself hours of library book hunting: Have a library spot… we used to keep our books in baskets behind the couch but we have more books than baskets now and bags make them difficult to get in and out… So we have a designated library shelf. You can take one book away at a time and I often plonk down right there and read my way through a pile of books. When it is time to head for the library out come the bags and the books are dropped in and returned.

    And the Se7en + 1th tip:

  15. Gather your errands: Getting small kids in and out of a car can literally take years off your life and I am sure folks whose kids are older have forgotten how tiresome it is. Checking everyone is safety seat-belted… checking again… and again. Spotting Houdini and beginning again. I gather all my errands together and have massive errand days, where we make a huge list and group errands in the same area together and go… go, go, go… lot of rewards on the way and keeping it light… we get it done all at once rather than in and out of the car every day!!!

Thats us… hope all these tips free up hours of your time and gives you heaps more time to play!!!”
