Playing Catch up

Does anyone actually look this good when they wake up??

Busy Busy Busy…today is going to be a busy day!

I have been in bed sick for the last couple of days, and I wasn’t much use leading up to my bed-ridden state. Needless to say, I will be spending a lot of time doing dishes and catching up on laundry today.

I’m not complaining though, I’m just happy to wake up and have energy today! It has been really difficult to feel so drained, unmotivated and unwell.

I am grateful for my hubby for taking care of the kids, and for my mum and my friend for making such delicious hearty meals for us.

I am also grateful for good friends. There’s nothing better than having a good ol’ girly chat with your gal pals to put a smile on your face…and I was lucky yesterday, and I got to catch up with two of them!

This week is a busy one too. I am tutoring a Playcentre course tomorrow, then we are running the Relief Society “Food Show” at our church on Thursday (want to come?) I’m demonstrating my cinnamon bun recipe and others will be demonstrating how to make bread rolls, taco bowls and how to make your chicken streeetch…plus my favourite part…taste testing!!

So, hip hip horray for a new day! I will take cleaning, laundry, running errands and looking after kids over how I was feeling in the weekend any day!

“Out of Order”

I am “out of order” again! My head ache from last month has come back. :( Thankfully, not with the body ache *phew*.

All I want to do is hop in bed, pull my blankets up and snuggle into them.

I have to say, when you are unwell, you really do appreciate your health, and the ability to get up and do things with ease!

I hope you are all keeping well!

Will be in touch soon!

Down for the count

Maybe you all saw it coming. I mean it makes total sense…I was home with 4 sick kids with symptoms ranging from ear aches to coughs to runny noses. I have been sick in bed all day.

Hubby went out to drop off dvds, and I asked him to pretty please pick me up a dvd and the book I had on reserve at the library (I *heart* my hubby!).  He even set me up with an internet connection in our bedroom . Yes, I am totally spoiled, but I would much rather be healthy!

So I am going to start taking my vitamins again, drink plenty of water, exercise more, get plenty of sleep and eat loads more fruit and veges!

Let’s hope for a quick recovery!

Fun Kids Activity: Car Adventures

Things go grey by Imeus Design @ www.laffichemoderne.com

To combat cabin fever I like to take the kids out for a drive. I recently posted about our drive around the bays and included some links for ideas to do when you are stuck indoors.

The 3 school kids are home sick from school at the mo. Yesterday, after we dropped hubby off at work, my son asked if we could go on an ADVENTURE?!

I knew exactly what he meant.

We sometimes go on “adventures” in the car. It is where I let the kids tell me where to go. They will shout out, “Let’s go down that street!” or I will ask, “Shall we go left or right?” when we get to an intersection.

We look at road signs and I ask the kids what they think it means.

Once it is time to go home, I tell the kids to keep a look out for the road signs with our suburb on it. I get them to tell me the direction the signs are telling us to go. Once they were familiar with where we are, they just rattle off which streets I need to go down to get home.

It’s a great activity to talk about all sorts of things. The seasons, pointing out road works, places we used to visit etc etc.

My son must have enjoyed it because the first thing he told his dad when he got home was, “Daddy! We went on an adventure!!”

Combating Cabin Fever!

Sometimes children can get a bit of cabin fever when the weather limits you to indoor activities.

At the moment I have a child with a runny nose and cough, so I am getting a bit of cabin fever myself! (Can you tell I’m on day 4 of our “quarantine”??)

To get us out of the house, I took the kids out for a drive today. We talked about and watched the trains go in and out of the station, we went to the docks to see the crates getting lifted by huge machinery, and watched the logs being loaded onto a cargo boat. Lots of exploring from the comfort of our car.

Yesterday, I took the kids for a drive out around the bays. We went right from Oriental Bay to Owhiro Bay, watching the big waves break against the rocks. The surfers in Lyall Bay were certainly taking advantage of it.

I came across two really distinctive building on our drive around the bays. I was amazed that they actually looked lived in!

Later on I found out they are owned by some people who rent out “The Lighthouse” and “The Keep”. What an original idea!

Since it looks like my son will need to stay home from school tomorrow as well, I went searching online for some more ideas to combat cabin fever. I found two articles with suggestions that are right up my alley. I can’t wait to try some of them!

Not exactly what I had planned..

Getting sick during the school holidays isn’t exactly what I had planned! I’ve been sick since Thursday, and the doctor says it is viral and that it will probably go on a few more days! ugh!

The kids have been great and hubby has been keeping the house ticking along.

Hopefully, I will be back on my feet really soon! Then I will have something more to post about, other than the colour of my tissue boxes (which have quite nice floral photos actually!)

Getting the support when it is needed

As my children become older, I feel them inching towards becoming a teenager. I sometimes fear the world they are going to be a part of. Will they be ready for the choices that will be put before them? Will they be able to be strong enough to withstand peer pressure?

And then, I am reminded that the world isn’t such a scarey place. In fact, I have seen lovely examples of what beauty there is in the world:

  • A community coming together with support and love for a family where the mother of two young children has fallen gravely ill.
  • The rally of support and prayers from around the world to a fellow blogger who’s husband has been told they will be loosing their job at the beginning of next year.
  • The lovely people in our children’s lives who give of their time, and make them feel like amazing lil’ human beings.
  • Friends and family who step in to babysit and help with pick ups and drop offs to ease the strain on the family.
  • And much much more…

When I marvel at the good there is in the world, I am filled with gratitude and hope.

Thank you for making a difference for good.

Being a mother when you’re not 100%

Today I have learned that as mothers we are pretty amazing. We look after others, when we could do with looking after ourselves. When we get back to 100% we wil be able to do all the things we can’t while we are unwell. Until then, we need to take it easy, and be kind to ourselves.

My cold/flu has been coming and going for the past few weeks. When I was really unwell, my hubby would stay home from work to look after the kids. Now it’s tough because I am well enough that I can be out of bed, but not well enough to have the energy to keep on top of the house.

I must be feeling better and am not too sleep depreived because I am itching to clean up the house today.

Isn’t it interesting how our physical health and mental health has such a big influence over everything. It is common sense really, but it is something that we often overlook when our reserves are depleated. It isn’t until we recover to our “normal” selves, that we realise that our “get-up-and-go” had gone on a holiday.

Here are some simple tips, for when your “get-up-and-go” decides to have a “walk-about”: Continue reading
